Traditional Karate at Shoshin Karate Club
Welcome to our club web page. At Shoshin Karate Club we focus on training in traditional karate, with an emphasis on enjoyment, good health and practical skills.
We are the only Karate Club in Barrow-in-Furness that specifically does not do any kind of sports or competition karate. The club is open to anyone age 6+ and we have a full cross section of age groups training with us.
Our style of karate is Wado Ryu, or Way of Peace style. Our syllabus includes kicking, punching, the use of knees and elbows, plus grappling, kata application, self defence sparring and push hands.
About Wado Ryu
It is one of the four major styles of Japanese karate alongside Shotokan, Goju Ryu and Shito Ryu. It was created by Hironori Ohtsuka in Japan.
The essence of wado is to avoid incoming attacks by using body movements, footwork and deflecting movements. Much of the thought behind the style originates with the Japanese martial arts of sword fighting (Ken Jitsu) and unarmed combat (Ju Jitsu). It includes a number of techniques such as arm locks, throws, vital points and grappling.
The light, fast movements of wado lend itself well to competition fighting (sport karate), although our club does not study the sports form.
It can be said that Wado Ryu is a combination of Old School Okinawan Karate and the traditional Japanese martial arts.
